In The Friends of Voltaire, Evelyn Beatrice Hall wrote”: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” It is becoming increasingly difficult to say anything online for fear someone who does not agree with what you say taking offence and reporting your account. It is also becoming impossible to post anything for fear of fact checkers discrediting what you have written, even if what you have posted has come directly from a Nobel Prize winning doctor or journalist. When social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube remove accounts they do not agree with then we have a problem. When the public are faced with only one viewpoint can they make an informed choice?
Censorship did not come to the west overnight; it has been introduced slowly through main stream media pushing certain narratives which have been fleshed out by media barons and governments alike. Almost from the outset of the present Covid-19 crisis the narrative from main stream media has been fear. Even before the pandemic hit the United Kingdom the media were running with scare stories out of China and Italy. With dissenting voices such as David Icke being reported as conspiracy theorists. Those in the independent media started to report an alternative view, one, which world governments and media did not want getting out to the public.
One of the loudest dissenting voices was that of the then President of the United States Donald Trump who had been a thorn in the side of world leaders and indeed mainstream media such as CNN, often deeming them to be ‘fake News’. In the last days in office Trump found himself silenced, suspended and eventually kicked from Twitter. If social media giants can silence the voice of a sitting President, then they can and will silence anyone and they have. Those who openly supported Trump found their accounts suspended, or in some cases, gone. And others having to revert to speaking in code in order to keep their accounts and in some cases livelihoods on YouTube.
One of the fundamental rights we have as humans is the right to freedom of speech, if that is taken then we have no way of expressing ourselves, or indeed defending ourselves. Big tech, world governments and mainstream media are all scared of one thing. The truth getting out to the public, the more they push back the more the public wonder what is going on. When they have read a post on Twitter or Facebook that has been fact checked it tells them one thing. Whatever was said in that post they do not with the public to read. Which may just push alarm bells and have those who have more than one braincell ask the question what are they trying to hide.
